Pure Silver Gold-Plated Coin - Pandas: A Golden Gift of Friendship (2019)

$39.95 CAD
Mintage: 88,888
Canada and US only

Includes three different Chinese calligraphy cards (peace, happiness, and strength).

No matter the circumstances, few things are as meaningful as the people who enrich our lives. Your fully gold-plated $8 pure silver coin is a heartfelt keepsake of friendship and appreciation. Clad in the colour of prosperity, the coin features a Chinese national treasure and a beloved international symbol of friendship, peace and harmony. Playful and sweet natured, the bamboo-loving pandas are seated side by side like two close friends—a beautiful representation of a special bond that is built on honesty, loyalty, trust and generosity.

In addition, your coin comes with three different Chinese calligraphy cards (peace, happiness, and strength) by Kit Au, a renowned Chinese calligrapher whose artwork includes the platform calligraphy for Hong Kong’s underground subway stations. This customizable feature allows you to attach personal meaning to the coin and express your appreciation for its recipient, whether it’s a friend whose bond has become stronger with the years, a parent who has inspired peace, or a child who has brought joy to one’s life.

Give the gift of friendship with this gold-plated Pandas coin! Order today!

Special features:
  • A WISH FOR GOOD FORTUNE AND PROSPERITY! The $8 denomination brings good fortune since ‘8’ is the luckiest number in Chinese culture, while gold is a symbol of wealth and prosperity.
  • FULLY GOLD PLATED! One of the Royal Canadian Mint’s most affordable coins, your 99.99% pure silver piece is fully gold plated to give it the look of a gold coin.
  • MAKE IT MORE PERSONAL! Your coin comes with three different Chinese calligraphy cards (peace, happiness and strength).
  • A CROSS-CULTURAL CELEBRATION! Along with the bilingual inscriptions “FRIENDSHIP” and “AMITIE”, your coin includes the Chinese character for “friendship”.
  • AN INSTANT GIFT! This keepsake of friendship is a ready-made gift as it comes enclosed in a colourful presentation card with envelope.

Your coin is inspired by the giant panda’s (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) playful personality, peaceful demeanour and friendly characteristics. Like old friends, the two giant pandas sit beside one another, both facing the viewer while feeding on bamboo leaves and stalks. Above one panda’s head is the Chinese character for “friendship”, which, along with the engraved words “FRIENDSHIP” and “AMITIE”, transforms the wildlife-themed image into a cross-cultural celebration of friendship. The reverse also features the word “CANADA” and “2019”, along with a “P” mark that denotes the plated nature of the coin. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Chinese Blessings - About the calligraphy artist:

Kit Tong Abe Au is a professional architect who learned traditional Chinese calligraphy at an early age. His work includes the platform calligraphy for Hong Kong’s underground subway stations. After moving to Calgary in 2006, Mr. Au returned to architectural design and currently teaches Chinese calligraphy, art, and culture.

Did you know…
  • The Calgary Zoo is playing host to four visiting panda friends. In 2013, Canada welcomed Er Shun and Da Mao, a breeding pair on loan from China. These giant pandas and their adorable offsprings, Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue, were crowd favourites at the Toronto Zoo until 2018, when their friendship tour moved west to the Calgary Zoo, where they will reside until 2023.
  • The panda is no longer classified as an endangered species. The species was downgraded to “vulnerable” in 2016, thanks to the efforts of extensive breeding programs in zoos worldwide.
  • It eats for almost 16 hours a day. It takes a lot of bamboo to maintain a healthy weight of 125 kilograms! A panda spends up to 16 hours a day foraging and eating, with about 15 kilograms of bamboo to meet its nutritional needs.

This keepsake of friendship is a ready-made gift as it comes enclosed in a colourful presentation card with envelope.

Cute coin, liked the gold plating.

All the coins I buy in multiples are for gifts for my young grandchildren. So when they get at the age to appreciate such things as the different coins I've given them. If they really like them them they've been money well spent

Beyond Adorable

I bought it to wear it as it's the 27mm size right for the Bezeled coin holder necklace offered on the site. However it was to Pretty for me to want to remove it from the package! I might buy a second one to wear and one to keep in the package to ensure it will never be damaged.
