It’s one of the luckiest, and most popular design motifs that can be found in old Chinese houses, inspired by a visual pun or rebus in which the Chinese character for bat (fu) and good fortune or happiness (fu), are pronounced the same way; together on this 99.99% pure silver holed coin, they bring an abundance of blessings.

Your elegant and classic coin design by Canadian artist Simon Ng features a combination of Chinese motifs representing the auspicious “Five Blessings”; consisting of five bats surrounding the Chinese character shou (longevity), each bat representing health, wealth, longevity, virtue and a peaceful natural death in old age. The square hole in the centre is a distinct feature of ancient Chinese coins which represents the land. It’s framed by a circle of finely engraved scrolls and symbolic floral elements, while traditional Chinese latticework flows along the outer edge of the coin design. The floral elements also compliment the ornate scrollwork on the coin’s unique obverse, where the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth is engraved with remarkable finesse in a smoothly polished circle above the square hole.

Did you know…
  • Placing a bat behind one’s workstation is believed to attract good fortune and abundance, and repel negative energy. Hanging a bat in a prominent position by the front door or in the central hallway is also believed to boost one’s career and prosperity.
  • It’s no accident there are flowers in this coin design. Chinese culture is all about balance, and the bats in the design have a male (yang) energy, which is counterbalanced by the feminine (yin) energy of the flowers. The result? Harmony!
  • Many symbols in Chinese culture are the result of homophones (puns) where two words have the same pronunciation and are therefore given the same meaning. The number 8 is a strategic choice for this coin’s mintage because it is pronounced bā which is similar to fā (rich), and is therefore believed to bring wealth and prosperity!
  • Coins with square holes appeared in China around 500 BC as a means to string coins on a cord to form the main purchasing unit in use at the time (usually 1,000 coins). In a culture rich in art and symbolism, the coin’s round shape was soon interpreted to symbolize heaven, while the square hole represented land.

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a black beauty box.

An auspicious house warming present

This is a present for a for a friend as she moves into a new house; as her background is Chinese we wanted to get something that would be suitable. It looks like a very lovely coin, and we hope that she will treasure it, and have many happy years in her new home.

Purchased as gifts for my two daughters.

Nice design but ...

Overall, the quality of the design is good. Where this coin lacks is in the cleanliness of the cut out in the middle. I own other Asian themed coins which I have purchased in the past from the Mint which were cut with better precision. So I'm a little disappointed on that point. However, the design is well thought out and beautiful otherwise.
