Canada’s first Japanese immigrant arrived in New Westminster (British Columbia) in 1877. As regular steamship service between Yokohama and Vancouver increased, the growing number of Japanese immigrants prompted Japan to establish a Consulate in Vancouver.
As relations continued to develop, Japan established itsOttawa Legation in 1928 while Canada opened its mission in Tokyo in 1929—the first diplomaticoffice in Asia!
