    Of the 13 maple species that naturally grow in North America, 10 of them are found in Canada. 

    Seen on the coin's reverse, the sugar maple's double-winged fruit is known as samara. Its double wings allow the seed to remain airborne longer after it has fallen off the tree, so it can be sown farther away from the parent tree.

    Other than the one on our national flag, the maple leaf isn't an official symbol of Canada, but the maple tree (Acer) has been our official arboreal emblem since 1996.
