About
Sucker Moon brings the sucker fish back to the stream! Order today!
In April, the sucker fish returns to spawn after travelling to the spirit realm to receive cleansing techniques for this world. As it swims through the water, it purifies a path for the spirits and cleanses the water beings. As life bursts forth within the stream and along its banks, we are reminded that we are but partners in this experience called life—that theharmony within the stream can also exist within ourselves. Once we discover this and are healed, we canbring healing to others through our peaceful presence and actions.

Design:
Algonquin artist Frank Polson has created a captivating image of a full moon filling the sky as it sits low on the horizon behind a leafless tree. To the left, a sucker fish swims downward, away from the viewer, along the edge of the coin. A trail of bubbles forms in the wake of its tail as the fish turns towards the tree on the right. The use of bold lines, and the insertion of vivid colour within black areas as if to reveal what lies within, is a signature design element in woodland art.
Did you know…
- Sucker fish swim upstream to spawn when the waterreaches about 10°C in April, and a month later, theyoung fry return to the same lake or river as theirparents. During the spawn, even the smallest urban stream can swell with several thousand fish, highlighting the critical role that tiny, seemingly insignificant habitat can play in the preservation of nature.
- Water plays a significant role at every level of Indigenous life. It is the blood of Mother Earth, and the fundamental life-giving force for every being on this planet. Women carry water within themselves where babies are born, and therefore have a special connection to water. They are the ones who carry the knowledge of honouring and purifying this vital resource.
- The moon exerts far more gravitational force on the Earth than the sun because of its close proximity. The best-known effect is the ocean’s tides, but science is revealing the moon’s powerful influence on the Earth’s crust, its molten core, the atmosphere, even human physiology!
- North America’s Indigenous cultures use the lunarcycles to track time and will often use the 13 large scutes on a turtle’s back as a calendar. Each moon has a distinct name that reflects the seasonal changes, and has a specific teaching attached to it. Many variations exist, but one of the most prevalent is the Anishinaabe Thirteen Grandmother MoonTeachings.
- “Anishinaabe” means “the good beings” or “original person.” It is the ethnic term for the Algonquian tribes of the Great Lakes, such as the Ojibway, Algonquin, Ottawa, Nipissing, and others, and is spelled and pronounced in various ways. Although the tribes’ cultures and languages are similar, each has its own distinct leadership and identity.
- Anishinaabe art is often referred to as “woodland art.” It promotes Anishinaabeculture by depicting traditional scenes in what arecommonly known as “legend paintings” or “medicine paintings.”
