Design:
Your coin is based on Big Raven (1931) by Canadian artist Emily Carr. Like the original oil painting, this rendering features vivid colours and sweeping lines that are characteristic of the artist’s expressive style. Waves of overgrownvegetation surround the carved raven, while behind it, geometric-shaped columns of light descend from the sky. The coin’s silver surface stands in for the beams of light that shine down from the dark clouds above, with expertly engraved lines that replicate individual brushstrokes. A canvas effect adds an extra layer of detail that creates the appearance of art painted directly on the coin-turned-canvas. The image is bordered by the engraved words “BIG RAVEN • 1931 • GRAND CORBEAU” and “EMILY CARR”. The obverse replicates the engraved sky and simulated brushstrokes from the reverse, and features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
Did you know…
- Big Raven was inspired by a six-week sketching trip in 1912, when Carr travelled to Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) and madeher way to Cumshewa, a village at the northern entrance to Cumshewa Inlet. There, she painted a watercolour titled Cumshewa, which wasre-interpreted in a more modernist style in 1931.
- According to Carr’s memoir published in 1941, the subject was a weather-beaten carving of a raven that sat atop one of two totem poles, which “were dark and colourless, the wood toneless from pouring rain.”
- The painting was also featured on a Canadian postage stamp issued in 1971.
- Carr began painting at a young age and followed her passion to California and Europe, but only gained prominence as an artist in her later years. In 1927, a successful exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada and a meeting with other prominent artists inspired Carr toexperiment with a more modernist style that many Canadians associate with her work.
