Design:
Your coin features a near-faithful reproduction of W. H. J. Blackmore's design for the first Canadian gold coin. The focal point is the Canadian coat of arms, as it appeared before 1921: a quartered shield composed of the provincial arms of the Dominion of Canada (Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick).Beautifully framed by a wreath of maple boughs, the coat of arms is resplendent in selective gold plating that mimics the original coin's golden appearance. The luxurious plating also extends to the rim, as well as the raised beaded circle that frameseach side of the coin. The reverse features the word "CANADA" above the coat of arms, while the year "2017" and the face value "250 DOLLARS" are engraved beneath it. The obverse features the official Canada 150 privy mark beneath the gold-plated effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
Did you know…
- The idea of a Canadian gold coin took root as early as the mid-19th century, when Canada joined the international gold standard.
- The Klondike Gold Rush (1896-1899) resulted in increased awareness of Canada's mineral wealth. After lengthy negotiations, the Ottawa Mint Act was passed in 1901, allowing for a branch of the British Royal Mint to be established in Canada; the Ottawa branch of the British Royal Mint officially opened in 1908.
- The first gold coin was struck inMarch 1912. By August 1914, key changes to Canada's financial system had effectively suspended the gold standard, and in 1915, the Canadian gold coin program was cancelled.
- Many of the coins issued between 1912 and 1914 became part of the Dominion Government'sgold reserves. In March 1935, the newly formed Bank of Canada began collecting them in its vault, where many remained for over 75 years—until 2012, when some of these first gold coins were released back to the Royal Canadian Mint, and were made available to collectors.
