Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Pierre Leduc, your coin features a sideprofile of a majestic elk (Cervus canadensis). Detailed engraving adds a sense of texture to this majestic species' fur and towering rack of antlers, which overlap the field. Lifting its heavy head towards the sky, the bull releases its high-pitched cry into the autumn breeze, allowing it to resonate across the forest and river valley depicted in the background.
Did you know...
- The elk is one of the largest species of deer in the world—in fact, it is second only to the moose in size!
- A healthy male (bull) in his prime stands at an average height of 150 centimetres at the shoulders, but its towering rack of antlers can add up to 1.2 metresto its width and height. They can also weigh up to 22 kilograms!
- The bull re-grows its antlers each spring. Contrary to what some might think, you can't get an accurate sense of an elk's age by the number of tines on its antlers. A single tine typically appears in a bull's second year, and at leastone more is added each year—but only if the bull isin good health. An older bull in poor health may have just as many tines as a younger, healthier one.
- More than half of Canada's elk population is found in British Columbia, and there is also a significant population in Alberta. Thousands more can be found in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, while elk were reintroduced to northern Ontario and Yukon during the last century.
