Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Lilyane Coulombe, your coin features a stunning design that celebrates Canada's mighty maples. Meticulous engraving recreates each leaf in astounding detail, with deeply cut lobes and serrated edges that add a sense of texture and depth. The leafy trio is representative of three maple species that are native to Canada, with selective gold plating to convey their most famous colours. In the centre is an engraved silver maple leaf; on the left is a red maple leaf, with pink gold plating that is reminiscent of its crimson autumn foliage; on the right is a sugar maple leaf, known for autumnalhues of gold that are represented by yellow gold plating.
Did you know…
- The sugar maple is named for the sweet sap it yields in latewinter/early spring, when it is boiled to make maple syrup.
- The silver maple gets its name for the silvery underside of its leaves in the summer.
- The red maple is named for the red colour of its leaves in autumn; the sugar maple leaf will either be yellow, orange or red, while the silver maple is rarely red—most often yellow or rusty brown.
- How can you identify each maple species? Look at the shape of their leaves: the red maple leaf has sharp, irregular teeth and narrow V-shaped valleys between its three pointy lobes; the sugar maple leaf is larger, with fewer teeth and curvier valleys between its lobes; the silver maple leaf's five lobes are narrower than other maple species, with deep, narrow notches.
