Design:
The reverse design by Steve Hepburn re-creates thethrilling experience of witnessing a whale breaching in Canada's coastal waters. In the foreground, a humpback whale suddenly lifts itself above thesurface of the water, much to the delight of observers onboard a whale watch boat in the background. The image is framed by stylized icons that representpopular outdoor activities and sights in Canada: (clockwise from top) Niagara Falls; a Christmas tree; a rodeo; wine tasting; dogsledding; folk music; cherry blossoms; maple syrup tasting; whale watching;tulips; coastal drives; and the aurora borealis. The obverse features the year "2019" and face value "3 DOLLARS", and the framed effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
Did you know…
- The best time for whale watching in Canada? It depends on the species. On the Pacific coast, you'llhave a higher chance of seeing orcas, grey whales and more between April and October. From May to October, you might spot species like the right, finback, minke and humpback whale in our Atlantic waters, or blue whales and belugas in the St. Lawrence. In the summer, you could also head north to the polar bear capital, Churchill, Manitoba, to see belugas.
- If a whale lifts its tail out of the water and slaps it hard on the surface, that behaviour is known as lobtailing. A vertical half rise of the head out of thewater is known as spyhopping. And breaching is whenthe whale launches itself out of the water—as it does on this coin!
- If you see a whale, give it space—it's the law. With a fewexceptions, boats, kayakers and other mariners in Canadian waters must stay at least 100 metres away from most whales, porpoises and dolphins. That number jumps to 200 metres for orcas in the west, and 400 metres for endangered or threatened species in the St. Lawrence estuary. These measures help protect our marine mammals and minimize disturbances that could cause harm to these captivating creatures.
