Known for his hard slapshot and explosive speed, Yvan“the Roadrunner” Cournoyer blewpast many of the top blueliners of the 1960s and 1970s on his way to becoming a 10-time Stanley Cup® champion with the Montreal Canadiens. Despite playing a limited role in hisfirst few seasons with Montreal, Cournoyer went on to become one of the league’s premier forwards for much of his 16-year NHL career (1963-1979).The fast-skating right-winger scored 25 goals or more in 11 consecutive seasons, while his record-setting 15 goals in 17 playoff games earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1973. Number 12 also led a star-filled team to consecutive Stanley Cup Championships during his four-year tenure as team captain (1975-1979) — an incredible stretch that also set NHL team records for most points and fewest losses. Inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982, Yvan Cournoyer is one of six NHL stars featured in this rectangular tribute to some of the legendary Canadian captains of an Original Six team.
The Original Six™: Montreal Canadiens
Founded in 1909, the Montreal Canadiens are 24-time Stanley Cup champions and one of the oldest professional sports franchises in North America. Speed and offensive ability have always been the hallmarks of the Canadiens, who dominated during the Original Six era. After five consecutive Cups from 1956to 1960, the team won four more times in the 1960s and six in the 1970s—10 championships in 15 seasons, and Yvan Cournoyer’s name appears on the Cup for each one.
