Canada began the war as a junior partner to Britain but by war’s end was a full-fledged ally with a first-rate fighting force. The first coin in this limited series highlights Canada’s roleon the Western Front in 1918, when a return to openwarfare allowed the courageous Canadian cavalry to play their intended role in an increasingly mechanized conflict. Once the deadlock was broken in 1918, a return to a war of movement finally allowed Canada’s cavalry units to play a greater combat role in places such as Moreuil Wood, Amiens, Cambrai and others, where they fought in concert with the tanks and armoured cars that came to define war in the 20th century.

Multiple finishes give the engraved design a sense of depth as the Canadian cavalry charges towards enemy positions, swords drawn, with both man and beast exemplifying courage even under threat of enemy fire. The image is paired with the general servicebadge of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, which isselectively gold-plated to hint at the pride of a young nation for its fighting force throughout the war and during “Canada’s Hundred Days.” The selectively gold-plated obverse features the effigy of King George V by Sir E. • Canada contributed an estimated 130,000 horses to thewar abroad, including more than 10% of the horses used by the British armies on the Western Front.
• The Canadian cavalry played an important role during the German spring offensives of 1918—in fact, the Battle ofMoreuil Wood is often cited as one of the last great cavalry charges.  Although heavily outnumbered, the courageous attack by the 3000-strong Canadian Cavalry Brigade helped to stop the German 1918 Spring Offensive.
• The Canadian Cavalry Brigade (CCB) spent much of the war with the British Cavalry Corps. The CCB was comprised of the Lord Strathcona’s Horse(Royal Canadians), the Fort Garry Horse, and the Royal Canadian Dragoons. During the Hundred Days Offensive, it took part in the successful offensive at Amiens; in its last action of the war, at the Battle of Cambrai, the brigade captured more than 400 prisoners.
• Three divisional cavalry squadrons were amalgamatedinto a regiment known as the Canadian Light Horse (CLH). It patrolled ahead of and helped screen the advance of the Canadian Corps during the Hundred Days Offensive.
