Among the tall spruce trees, the wolf has made its way to the crest of a snow-covered hill, where it pauses to survey the frozen lake below. Its head is turned to the left, which allows a glimpse of its facial features. Throughout this winter scene, the combination of engraving and various finishing techniques adds striking depth to the design—especiallythe crisp impression of the wolf's four-toed tracks, which are also engraved on the coin's edge in a continuous pattern.
