- Written by Canadian John McCrae of Guelph, Ont., the poem In Flanders Field inspired an Americancampaign to adopt the poppy as a memorial symbol, which would, in turn, inspire French fundraising efforts to help children in war-torn areas by selling artificial poppies.
- On July 5, 1921, the Great War Veteran’s Association in Canada formally adopted the poppy as the national Flower of Remembrance. This organization merged withother veteran groups to form the Canadian Legion in1925.
- Today, the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual poppy campaign continues to raise funds for all of Canada’s veterans and their families.
- Worn during the Remembrance period (last Friday in Octoberto November 11), a poppy should be placed on the left side and over the heart.
