The glorious Canadian maple and our beloved Sovereign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada – two icons that for more than sixty years have symbolized our country and our collective sense of identity. The Royal Canadian Mint proudly celebrates the remarkable reign of our Queen with a new series featuring the four effigies of Her Majesty that haveappeared on Canadian circulated coinage since 1953.

Design:
Pointing downward, the two overlapping maple sugar leaves are attached by their stems to a single twig at the top of the image. The leaves are engraved with careful precision using a variety of textures to lend depth to the image. The reverse is engraved with the words “CANADA”, the date“2014”, and the face value of “10 DOLLARS”. The obverse design features the first obverse of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to appear on Canadian coinage in 1953, when she was 27 years old. Her Majesty wears a simple laurel wreath around her head. Her shoulders are draped in a flowing garment. The effigy is encircled with the Latin legend “ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA,” which means “Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen.”
The rain that fell on the streets of London on Coronation Day (June 2, 1953) could not dampen the spirits of the millions of people who lined the procession route. In a horse-drawn carriage, Her Majesty proceeded to Westminster Abbey where she was crowned during an ancient and historic coronation service. Broadcast by television and shown in Canada ahead of anyother country, those who watched could not possibly know that they were witnessing the beginning of a most remarkable reign that would extend well into the next millennium.
When the newly crowned monarch rose from her throne, QueenElizabeth II was cheered by supporters around the world. In Canada, Her Majesty had occupied a warm place in the hearts of Canadians ever since her firsttour here two years earlier. Canadians proudly welcomed their newly crowned Sovereign.
The first portrait of the new Queen to appear on coinage was the one displayed on the obverse of this piece. Issued in1953 and notable for the absence of a crown, this royal effigy was designed by British sculptor Mary Gillick and used for circulation coinage in Britain and throughout the Commonwealth.
Since her coronation in 1953, Queen Elizabeth II has toured Canada more than twenty times. Her Majesty, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, has traversed every region of this massive land, from the Atlantic to the Pacific and from the Great lakes to the Arctic Circle. On each tour, the depth of their affection for and dedication to Canada and Canadians deepens.
